I asked the cosmos for my friendship to be reciprocated by someone who would give as much back to me as I gave to them. I referred to my friend's suicide, and how much I longed to share my friendship with another as much as I had with him.
I said, "Oh great Oneness of the universe, I am a very good person to be someone's best friend. I have so much warmth within me that I know someone will benefit from that. All I ask is that I be allowed to trust in them, and be able to confide my feelings without them laughing at me when I do so. I do not care what they look like or what they do. I know that by having a best buddy that I will have someone who will not let me down, and I will not let them down."
A little while after this, a friend of mine was moving from a house to a tower block. He had a little dog, a Yorkshire terrier that was 11 months old. The problem was that pets were not allowed in the tower block. The terrier's name was Harley.
I took Harley in, as I couldn't bear to see him go to a cat and dog shelter, although I never intended to keep him.
I was in a quandary, stuck with a terrier. I advertised in the free-ads newspaper: ‘Free to good home, a Yorkshire terrier …’.
A week later the ad appeared, but by then Harley had grown on me.
The phone rang soon after, "Hello, is the Yorkshire Terrier still available?" the person on the other end of the line asked.
"No, it’s gone I'm afraid," I replied as I sat with Harley on my lap.
Call me soft or whatever, but I couldn't give Harley up. Now all these years later, I have a friend I can confide my feelings to without them laughing at me, and someone I can share my friendship with. Little Harley understands a lot of words, He's a great, loyal friend and comes almost everywhere with me. I have even sneaked him into hotel rooms. He stands in a holdall, with his little nose poking out of the end, where I leave the zipper open a little way to give him air.
He is a clever little fellow, and knows not to say anything when in that holdall. Of course, when in bed and people walk past the hotel room, he gives the game away by giving a gruff warning bark. His protective warning awakens me, and I cuddle him in. Soon he goes back to sleep, lying on his back with his head on the pillow! I thanked the cosmos then for my new friend, and I still do so today.
